Know the request, not the argument

Utica ESA letter questions
Do I need a lawyer to make an accommodation request?
No. The request is a written note to your landlord with the clinician's letter attached. If you are refused, filing with the New York State Division of Human Rights is free and does not require a lawyer either.
My landlord owns just one house. Do the rules apply?
In most circumstances yes, though narrow exemptions exist for certain very small owner-occupied properties. If a landlord claims one, raise it with the State Division of Human Rights rather than accepting it.
Does my letter need to be in English?
The letter is written in English because that is what landlords, agencies and courts in New York work in. If English is not your first language, bring that up when you book so your consultation can be arranged in a way that works for you.
Do I still need to license my dog in Oneida County?
Yes. County dog licensing and rabies vaccination rules apply to assistance animals the same as any other dog. The accommodation exempts you from landlord pet fees only.
